Program and Schedule for Third Annual Conference and Shabbaton

From Jewish ethics to free press copyright law, from Israel and Iran to 21st-century sports coverage, a wide range of topics will be on the schedule when the JSPA’s Third Annual Conference and Shabbaton convenes this Thursday for two days of high school journalism workshops followed by a Shabbaton with featured speaker and dilemma discussion.

Along with keynote speakers David Siegel, Consul General of Israel for the Southwestern U.S., and Mitchell Landsberg, Deputy Foreign and National Editor of the Los Angeles Times, workshop presenters will include Eric Nusbaum, West Coast Editor of VICE Sports; Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky of B’nai David-Judea about journalism and halacha; and UCLA Law professor Rachel Faulkner, who will speak on copyright law and what sources student newspapers can and cannot legally use.

Marshall Weiss of the American Jewish Press Association will introduce the new “Write Your Own Code of Ethics” website co-sponsored by the Shalom Hartman Institute; and Rob Eshman, editor-in-chief of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, will discuss last summer’s coverage of the Iran nuclear deal.

Other speakers will address objectivity, how to conduct a good interview, opinion writing and how to lead from your editorial page, and how to lay out a newspaper center-spread using InDesign.  The conference will also announce winners in the Third Annual Jewish Scholastic Journalism competition.
