WINNER: Milken High School senior Gabi Kamran receives the first-ever Norman Alexander Award from Mel Wacks, director of the Jewish-American Hall of Fame. Gabi wrote about Betty Friedan and tikkun olam.

The winner of the first Norman E. Alexander Award for Excellence in Jewish Student writing is Gabriella “Gabi” Kamran, who is now a senior at Milken Community High School right here in Los Angeles. Gabi is also the Voices editor of the student newspaper The Roar.
Gabi was surprised at a senior class meeting Oct. 1 presented with the award — a $500 check and a commemorative silver medal — by Mel Wacks, Director of the Jewish-American Hall of Fame.
The contest subject was “American Jews and Tikkun Olam, Healing the World,” and Gabi’s winning essay was written about the American Jewish feminist and author Betty Friedan.
Titled “Betty Friedan, the feminist and activist, a woman with a pen and a will to change the world,”  the essay was selected by the judges unanimously.
The contest is an official program of Jewish American Heritage Month and sponsored by Fresh Ink for Teens, the Jewish-American Hall of Fame, the Jewish Scholastic Press Association, and The Jewish Week, New York City’s largest Jewish Newspaper.
